Light Seems Different Here

I’ve been spending time in California. We’re taking advantage of the current work-from-home scenarios that are giving us the flexibility to spend time with two of our children. Who would have thought we’d get to spend this much time with our adult children at this stage of their lives? It’s been a gift.

I’ve been noticing how the light seems different here. Everything’s very pink when filtered through smoke. It takes a while to adjust to the fact that, while it looks like Mars, we’re not actually on Mars.

On clear days, the light under the madron tree perfectly highlights the hummingbirds that flit about.

Sometimes, the light combines with the mist in a way that amps up the colors and the mood. It makes reality look more like a movie set. In those moments I’ve had to stop and pause to catch my breath.

Light seems different here.
